Congratulations to our senior postdoc, Dr. Cara Moravec, who was just awarded a K99 grant from NICHD for her research proposal “Identification of regulators in the vertebrate  egg-to-embryo transition”!!

In addition to our awesome group of UW-Madison undergraduate researchers, we’re also lucky to be hosting two NSF-REU Biological Interactions summer students, Lizette Arroyo and Morgan Banks! They’re each working full-time in the lab on individual research projects focused on conservation genetics/biobanking (Lizette) and maternal-effect genes in early development (Morgan).

Congrats to newly-minted Genetics PhD grad Christina Hansen! She successfully defended her doctoral thesis, “Structured aggregation of germline determinants in Danionin embryonic development” in June and is now continuing her work in the Pelegri lab as a postdoctoral research associate. Dr. Hansen also received the Wisconsin Initiative for Science Literacy (WISL) Award for Communicating PhD Research to the Public – check it out here! http://www.scifun.org/Thesis_Awards/hansen.html

Congratulations to Pelegri lab postdoc Cara Moravec who was recently honored with the UW-Madison Postdoc Association (UWPA) Postdoc Excellence in Mentoring  Award!  https://intranet.med.wisc.edu/2021/06/07/postdoctoral-fellows-natascha-merten-and-cara-moravec-receive-mentoring-awards/

Dr. Moravec was also chosen to present her work as part of the Society for Developmental Biology’s Postdoctoral Seminar Series! Tune in this Friday, April 9th for her talk “A novel role for the chromosomal passenger complex in germ plasm aggregation during early development” https://www.sdbonline.org/sdb_postdoctoral_seminar_series

Busy time for the Pelegri lab with PhD students Trevor Chamberlain, Ryan Trevena, & Christina Hansen, postdoc Cara Moravec, and research intern Gabriella (Gabby) Voit all presenting their research in flash poster talks at the online Society for Developmental Biology conference this week. Special shout-out to Gabby for being selected as a finalist in the undergraduate poster competition!!

Congrats to postdoc Cara Moravec for being selected to give a talk at the 2020 Genome Writers Guild virtual conference! She will present “The identification of maternal-effect genes in zebrafish by a maternal crispant screen” on July 24th. Registration is still open (and free!)
